What have we learned from the debate over drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge? Is it just another place where we should take what is there and use it with no thought of the consequences? Does ANWR represent a vital resource to keep our society running the way it has for much of the 20th Century? Hopefully, if nothing else, it makes us think about the other possibilities out there. The finale to “Oil on Ice” shows us there are not only viable alternatives to using oil, but that these alternatives would actually be cheeper and better for all of us. Solar power, hybrid cars, wind power – take your pick, we just need to take that first step into the unknown. We’ll have to change our behavior some time soon, so why not do it now and preserve some of the most beautiful areas of the world while we’re at it?
